Afghanistan: WHO EMR Polio Bulletin Issue No. 1444, Week 22 (ending on 07/06/2026)

Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) Cases:No new WPV1 positive cases reported this week. In total, 52 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 to date (21 from Afghanistan and 31 from Pakistan in 2025) and 7 WPV1 cases reported in 2026 (4 from Afghanistan and 3 from Pakistan). Environment: Four new WPV1 positive environmental samples in 2026 from Pakistan reported this week. The new reported WPV1 environmental samples are: 2 from Balochistan province (1 each from Dera Bugti and Chaman), 2 from Bannu district of Kyber PakhtunKhwa province, with collection dates between 5th and 12th May 2026. In total, 745 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (94 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan) and 123 WPV1-positive environmental samples reported in 2026 (34 from Afghanistan and 89 from Pakistan). Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) Cases: cVDPV2:No new positive cases reported this week. The cVDPV2 case count to date in 2026 is 6 (5 from Somalia and 1 from Sudan) and in 2025 is 47 (31 from Yemen, 13 from Sudan, 2 from Somalia and 1 from Djibouti). Environment cVDPV1:No new cVDPV1 isolates were reported this week. cVDPV1 were confirmed from 10 environmental samples in 2025 (all from Djibouti). cVDPV2: No new cVDPV2 isolates were reported this week. To date, cVDPV2 was confirmed in 11 sewage water samples in 2026 (8 from Somalia and 3 from Sudan), and In 2025 from 58 samples (17 from Djibouti, 15 from Yemen, 13 from Somalia, 7 from occupied Palestinian territory, and 6 from Sudan)
